My basement was damaged from water. Quail Construction came in and tore out the moldy drywall, removed carpet, and the baseboards. They installed drain tile, a new sump pump, all new flooring throughout the basement, and installed new drywall. They made it all work. From the start, they analyzed the problem well. We have not had any moisture in the basement since. They matched the drywall perfectly. Everything looks great. I don’t have a crack in the basement floor and I have a working sump pump. They tested the air for mold, so I am confident there is no mold. They did things I didn’t know needed to be done. But, they told me why things needed to be done and that was important to understand what they were doing. I am confident that every step they took was the right one for me.

We have a canopy building that the club owns that houses our expensive trail groomer. Someone had hit it with a vehicle. I knew Quail worked with EPS and knew that they would be able to fix it by getting the steel replaced. They called the company that originally did the building and put it back together. Seriously, they were awesome. They went a step above. They had a guy do all the ordering and he did the bid. Now you can’t tell it was ever hit. I would definitely use them again. I worried about it being a small project, but they did a nice job for me.

They have done several projects for me. Moving an old farmhouse was one and they put in a new basement and built a 32’ x 40’ garage plus EPS Solid Core building. Another project was the Old Video Warehouse that they gutted to open it up. They installed a new ceiling and new sheetrock. They lined up all the sub-contractors to make sure everything came together at once. We white boxed it, they finished it to that point so now whoever moves in has a clean start. I like that about Joe, he never gets worked up over any problems. No matter what, there is going to be problems that come up. I’ve been sticking with them for five years and there have been hiccups, but everything has come out right in the end.

It was everything I ever wanted. I can’t say enough about it and everyone we worked with. John, the foreman, and the whole crew were great. They worked through many stressful days!

We wanted an energy-efficient home build with SIPs. We were knowledgeable about Quail because they had done other construction of our post frame buildings. We knew we would feel very comfortable working with Joe and Anne. We were familiar with the product already and we trust Joe and what they have to offer.

We have been very satisfied with not only the solid core building but the attention to detail that is second to none. Joe goes above and beyond and he saw things that could improve the building and worked with our corporate officials to integrate them. In fact, this building is now being used as the model for future construction of new restaurants.

The efficiency offered by an EPS solid core (SIP) building was very appealing along with the fact that it could go up fast. Ultimately, it was chosen for the building project. The building is very comfortable and the design has great functionality for our needs. The office has really met all of our expectations and we enjoyed working with Quail Construction. They were very responsive to our needs.

I have worked with Joe and Quail Construction on a few different projects, most being commercial. One project included taking an existing building and sub-dividing it into four parts. Another project involved a new building that was built from the ground up to suit a national client that needed to lease space in Spencer. We have also done a few smaller projects and they helped a client of mine in building a new home since they couldn’t find anything to match what they wanted. The thing I absolutely love the most is they have a budget, they stick with it, and if it changes you know ahead of time. With some others you get an estimate and a surprise at the end. They were well organized and attentive to sticking to it. They said what they would do. We have a great working relationship with Joe. I have worked with two different crews and I have appreciated each of them. When you ask why something is being done, they explain it to you.

For the most part, we designed the house ourselves. We owned the property for 20 years, and for all that time we had lots of discussions and gathered ideas to build a new home. Between the two of us we designed it to fit the lot, our lifestyle and the views that we wanted. It is just over 2,000 sq. ft. in one story. Joe is my brother-in-law and at first, I steered away from family as I wasn’t’ sure it was a good mix. But it came down to him understanding me and what I wanted. He is very visual. His background was doing kitchen designs at one time and kitchens and bathrooms are very important in a new home. Our experience has been awesome. He is very passionate, and the further it progressed, the more passionate he gets. He listened to my ideas. When I talked to other contractors, they didn’t seem to want to do what I wanted, but more what they wanted.

The building I needed help with is about 30 years old and the original construction was standard framing lumber and much of it was rotten. So, after being exposed to the elements it was in bad, bad shape. They did a complete removal and reconstruction. It has a special challenge in that the roof needed the framing for support. I think they did a wonderful job. They picked quality materials and the crew was excellent. They were clean on the site and they were conscious of not damaging anything. They were a great crew. John and Joe were excellent leaders and they did an excellent job.

About Quail Construction

After returning home from WWII in 1945, John Anson Quail opened Quail Construction as a general contracting business based out of Spencer, IA. During his ownership of the company an innumerable number of small projects were completed, local agricultural buildings were constructed and over 100 local area homes were built. John was well-known for his craftsmanship and attention to detail that was unsurpassed. Quail Construction still benefits today from the loyal customer relationships he established.

We currently has five in-house construction crews allowing the same focus of attention to detail his grandfather believed in.

Joe Quail

Owner

Joseph “Joe” Quail, John’s grandson, is now the current owner of the company. Immediately following high school graduation Joe attended Luther College. He then entered the U.S. Coast Guard serving in Norfolk, VA; Cape Cod, MA; and Door County, WI. Upon his honorable discharge, Joe was recruited by Portside Builders, Inc., a large construction firm in Sturgeon Bay, WI on the Door County peninsula. During his seven year tenure for Portside Builders, Inc., as a Designer/Building Consultant, Joe was able to hone his design skills in both residential and commercial construction. The valuable lessons he had learned from working alongside his grandfather and father during his childhood have served him well.
